What it involves
Scar revision may use surgery, resurfacing or other treatments to improve a scar’s appearance or tightness. It cannot erase a scar. Raised scars, depressed scars and contractures require different assessments.
Risks and limitations
New scarring, recurrence, pigment change and poor healing are possible. Discuss any history of thick scars or keloids and whether a functional problem needs specialist care.
Recovery and follow-up
Scars continue to mature over time. The treating team should explain whether to wait before intervening and how long improvement may take. An edited portrait cannot model scar biology.
Questions for your consultation
What type of scar is this? Could waiting help? What degree of improvement is realistic and could the scar recur?
