What it involves
Dermabrasion mechanically resurfaces deeper skin layers for selected scars or lines. Microdermabrasion exfoliates more superficially. The similar names do not mean similar results or recovery.
Risks and limitations
Deeper resurfacing can cause infection, scarring and pigment changes. Superficial treatment can still irritate sensitive skin. Active skin disease and skin tone should be assessed before treatment.
Recovery and follow-up
Dermabrasion requires healing of treated skin; superficial microdermabrasion usually has less downtime. Ask about redness, dressings when needed, skin products and sun protection.
Questions for your consultation
