Otoplasty changes the shape, position or proportion of the outer ears. It can address prominence or structural differences. Ear pinning is one form of otoplasty and does not treat hearing loss.
Risks and limitations
Risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, altered sensation, asymmetry and recurrence of prominence. The two ears may remain different after surgery; exact symmetry is not a realistic promise.
Recovery and follow-up
Dressings protect the ears during early healing. Ask about sleeping, glasses, headwear, exercise and avoiding pressure on the repair. Do not change dressings without the team’s instructions.
