What it involves
Buccal fat removal reduces a deep cheek fat pad. It is not a general treatment for facial swelling or a substitute for assessing overall facial proportions. A naturally narrow face may become excessively hollow.
Risks and limitations
Risks include bleeding, infection, asymmetry and injury to facial nerve branches or a salivary duct. Over-reduction and an unsatisfactory appearance may be difficult to correct.
Recovery and follow-up
Swelling can hide the initial change. The treating team provides instructions for the incision inside the mouth and eating during recovery. Ask how facial aging could affect the long-term appearance.
Questions for your consultation
How might my cheeks look as I age? Why remove fat rather than leave it alone? What could be done if I dislike the result?
